Prison warning for serial petrol thief

A man took petrol several times from the same Tauranga service station without paying before he was finally caught, a judge was told today.

Ford Wayne Tawhara, 24, unemployed, admitted five charges of theft when he appeared before Judge Thomas Ingram in Tauranga District Court.

He also pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified.

Sergeant Sean Brennan said Tawhara helped himself to petrol costing various sums between $5.75 and $104.81 from a Fifteenth Avenue service station on March 23 and 26 and on April 18 and 22.

Airways takes fuel-saving message to the world

Airways New Zealand took its message on aircraft fuel saving to the world at the weekend.

With the focus of the International Air Transport Association’s annual meeting on the fuel and the environment, Airways’ chief executive Ashley Smout says the relationship between air traffic controllers and airlines is more crucial than ever.

Smout has been on a panel looking at greater efficiency by service providers and airlines at the meeting in Turkey.

Air traffic control rules and decisions account for around 12 per cent of aircraft fuel used globally, he said. “The key issue facing the airlines today is fuel. That represents millions of tonnes of CO2 - in New Zealand we’re leading the way in a number of areas in cutting that.”

Diesel to drive up price of fish

Sealord Group company secretary Terry Horne said fuel was the company’s second biggest cost after labour and the price increases were having a significant impact.

Sealord had rationalised its fleet over the past few years and introduced fuel-efficiency measures. “But it will ultimately impact on pricing in the future as companies look to increase cost recovery,” Horne said.

Talley’s Fisheries director, Andrew Talley, said the cost of commercial fuel was rising alongside domestic pump prices and was a critical factor for the whole fishing industry.
