American Speeds Jet Purchase

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

AMR Corp.’s American Airlines said it would accelerate its purchase of 737-800 aircraft from Boeing Co. to modernize its fleet and retire older, fuel-guzzling airplanes.

The move, which speeds up the delivery of an existing order for 70 737s and adds six to the order, follows American’s decision earlier this year to accelerate plans to begin replacing its aging fleet of 300 MD-80s. That aircraft, a workhorse airplane that American uses for most of its domestic flights, has an average age of 18 years at the airline and burns about 35% more fuel than the 737s that will replace them, American said.

Like other carriers, American, the world’s biggest as measured by passenger traffic, is responding to the recent run-up in fuel prices by grounding aircraft and reorganizing its fleet to fly more fuel-efficient planes. Aging aircraft are a problem for most of the big U.S. carriers, which kept older planes longer than they would have preferred, as they restructured following the post-Sept. 11 industry crisis.

Auto Makers Pull Back From Fuel-Economy Drive

Monday, August 4th, 2008

The auto industry said federal regulators are pushing too far, too fast in their effort to raise fuel-mileage rules. The complaints from the industry, which had previously voiced support for tougher standards, underscore how economic hardship is affecting a major policy debate.

Auto makers are objecting to new rules being crafted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The rules would require car makers to achieve a fleet-wide average fuel efficiency of at least 31.6 miles per gallon for cars and trucks by 2015, up from about 25 mpg today. The rules are a first step toward Congress’s goal of achieving average fuel economy of at least 35 mpg by 2020.

The agency is expected to finalize the rules this year, after considering public input and analyzing confidential product-plan submissions from manufacturers.

How you can reduce your petrol bill

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Rising petrol prices are gouging motorists’ hip pockets. We take a look at how petrol prices are set and what you can do to reduce your fuel bills.

Tips on cutting your petrol bill

• Drive carefully. Higher speeds use more fuel. Hard acceleration or braking also burn up petrol.

• If you’re driving a manual, make sure you’re in the right gear. If your car is working too hard, it’s burning too much petrol.

• Avoid driving in peak periods. Constantly stopping and starting your car, or spending long periods idling in traffic, wastes fuel.

Toyota develops new fuel cell with improved range

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Toyota has developed a new fuel cell hybrid vehicle in Japan that travels more than double the distance of its predecessor model, increasing the maximum cruising range from 205 miles (329 km) to 515 miles (828 km). The new Toyota FCHV-adv (fuel cell hybrid vehicle advanced) improves the cruising range with its newly-designed, high-performance Toyota FC Stack.

Fuel efficiency was improved by 25 per cent through improving fuel cell unit performance, enhancing the regenerative braking system and reducing energy consumed by the auxiliary system. The new Toyota-developed high-pressure hydrogen tanks also make it possible to travel approximately 828 km on a single fuelling, which more than doubles that of the previous Toyota FCHV.
