Reduce our dependency on petrol and diesel

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

AS we all know, the Government will be reducing or revamping the fuel subsidies in Malaysia. I do have a few questions and suggestions in areas which they might want to look into.

> Alternative fuel: What are our options or do we have an option? I feel that perhaps Malaysia should look at Brazil and other countries that are less dependent on petrol and diesel.

There are plenty of alternatives around but I do not see our Government doing anything to promote them.

Energy-efficient tech can stem oil-price hikes

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Crude oil prices continue to soar. Crude futures prices are setting new records daily and bolted to 135 dollars per barrel on the New York market Wednesday.

There is no particular bullishness about the rises, the prices are just increasing because more and more speculative money is flowing into crude oil markets. Some observers warn that crude oil prices could exceed 150 dollars if this goes on.

When the price reached 100 dollars a barrel, economists rightly predicted that high crude oil prices would dampen the world economy. If oil exceeds 150 dollars, further adverse effects cannot be avoided.

Chrysler offers $2.99 fuel-price guarantee

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Chrysler LLC will let U.S. consumers lock in gasoline prices for three years under a new incentive program launching at a time of sliding vehicle sales, rising oil prices and deepening consumer uncertainty.

The U.S. automaker, which has seen sales drop by almost 18 percent this year, said it would offer anyone buying one of its vehicles a pre-paid card that could be used to cap fuel prices at $2.99 per gallon for three years.

The sales incentive, which will be rolled out on Tuesday, will only cover the first 12,000 miles driven based on the estimated mileage for the Chrysler car or truck purchased, executives with the privately held automaker said.

Audi promises electric car within 10 years

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Audi is joining other German automakers in the effort to eliminate exhaust emissions, promising to bring an electric model to market in the next 10 years.

Rupert Stadler, Audi’s chairman and chief executive, said in an interview with German weekly Welt am Sonntag published Sunday that he expects battery technology to dominate in the coming five to 10 years.

“By then we will offer cars without exhaust emissions,” Reuters quoted Stadler as saying. “Electric cars offer great opportunities, which we have already seized on.”

Reducing vehicle emissions is a chief concern for automakers in Germany. BMW recently showed off a hydrogen-powered 7-series sedan at the 2008 SAE World Congress in Detroit that actually emits less carbon monoxide than are found in the air around it.

The spin on tires and fuel economy

Monday, May 5th, 2008

William Lowry recently spent $500 to replace the tires on his Toyota Camry hybrid. The salesman said the Goodyear Regatta 2 tires were just as good as the Bridgestone Turanzas that came with the car. But it didn’t take long for Lowry to notice that his fuel economy had fallen by five miles a gallon.

“I would have paid more for tires that get better mileage. Instead, I spent extra money for the privilege of spending more money on gas,” said Lowry, a UCLA professor, who asked the tire dealer about fuel efficiency and was told all tires were the same.

In fact, when it comes to fuel consumption, not all tires are created equal. According to experts, efficiency can vary by as much as half from tire to tire, and can reduce fuel economy by 10% or more.
