Toyota develops new fuel cell with improved range

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Toyota has developed a new fuel cell hybrid vehicle in Japan that travels more than double the distance of its predecessor model, increasing the maximum cruising range from 205 miles (329 km) to 515 miles (828 km). The new Toyota FCHV-adv (fuel cell hybrid vehicle advanced) improves the cruising range with its newly-designed, high-performance Toyota FC Stack.

Fuel efficiency was improved by 25 per cent through improving fuel cell unit performance, enhancing the regenerative braking system and reducing energy consumed by the auxiliary system. The new Toyota-developed high-pressure hydrogen tanks also make it possible to travel approximately 828 km on a single fuelling, which more than doubles that of the previous Toyota FCHV.

Petrol prices to be catalyst for green cars

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

As you drive your car and stare at the petrol gauge, you can take heart that you are not the only one hurting from rising fuel prices.

It has affected the car industry itself in a way that may see the end of cars as we know them.

The change is making its presence felt in America, where people have always embraced the big petrol engine. But it seems its days are numbered.

One of the world’s biggest car manufacturers, General Motors, has announced it is closing four of its plants because of the increasing price of fuel.

Reduce our dependency on petrol and diesel

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

AS we all know, the Government will be reducing or revamping the fuel subsidies in Malaysia. I do have a few questions and suggestions in areas which they might want to look into.

> Alternative fuel: What are our options or do we have an option? I feel that perhaps Malaysia should look at Brazil and other countries that are less dependent on petrol and diesel.

There are plenty of alternatives around but I do not see our Government doing anything to promote them.

Alternative Fuel at the Berlin Air Show

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Hey, if you were in the business of manufacturing products that some of your biggest customers could no longer afford to operate, you’d be scrambling for options, too.

The Berlin Air Show kicked off yesterday, and not surprisingly, much of the focus is on alternative fuels. The show takes place every two years and is a big deal: over 1,000 exhibitors from 37 countries gather at Berlin’s Schönefeld Airport to show off planes, cut deals, and talk about the state of the aerospace business.

Yesterday the two commercial jet giants took the stage to talk up some of their latest alternative fuel innovations.

Silicon Nanotubes For Hydrogen Storage In Fuel Cell Vehicles

Monday, April 21st, 2008

After powering the micro-electronics revolution, silicon could carve out an important new role in speeding the debut of ultra-clean fuel cell vehicles powered by hydrogen, researchers in China suggest. Their calculations show for the first time that silicon nanotubes can store hydrogen more efficiently than their carbon nanotube counterparts.

Bio-Fuels and Sequestering Are Not Solutions

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Last month Prime Minister Harper confirmed government support for carbon capture technology and tossed $240 million into a generating plant in Saskatchewan to convert it to a carbon capture and storage unit. The plan is to generate power with coal, trap the emissions, then pipe it underground. Whether it will work or not is yet to be determined, and if it does there is the question of whether it could happen fast enough to significantly slow down our ballooning carbon emission problem.

Preventing carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere is certainly a good thing, but technical fixes like carbon sequestering alone do not address the critical issue that we face with the environment, and alone are little more than an expensive public relations stunt.
