The high cost of diesel fuel is impacting West Michigan schools

Diesel will cost Forest Hills Public Schools as much as $125,000 more than officials planned to spend this school year.

The school board voted Monday night to authorize the district to spend up to $625,000 on diesel for the 2007-08 school year. The board previously approved $500,000 in August 2007.

It was a substantial increase over the prior year’s diesel cost of $390,000. Administrators hoped the initial increase would cover the rising cost of fuel.

It didn’t.

A gallon of diesel now runs anywhere from $4.15 and $4.78 around the state according to GasBuddy.com. The site lists Grand Rapids-area prices between $4.35 and $4.59.

Tim Rayner, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance, said the extra cost will certainly impact the district. Administrators plan to use the district’s reserves to cover the cost with just weeks left in the school year.
