Elders concerned about Reliance closing petrol pumps

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Reliance Industries’ decision to shut down about two-thirds of its petrol pumps in the country due to continued losses today came up in the Rajya Sabha with some members demanding action against the private firm.

Raising a supplementary on an original question pertaining to capital investment by oil companies in foreign countries, Digvijay Singh (JD-U) said youths were being driven to suicide after closure of petrol pumps by the firm.

Without naming Reliance, he sought to know what action the Government proposed to take against the firm for “depriving” the youths, who had invested Rs two to three crore in the petrol pumps, of their livelihood.

WestJet will charge more

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

WestJet Airlines Ltd. is considering increasing its fares or adding a fuel surcharge to all tickets to combat soaring fuel prices.

Sean Durfy, the low-cost carrier’s president and chief executive, said WestJet has yet to put fuel charges on its tickets, and is instead trying to mitigate rapidly rising fuel prices by effectively managing costs, increasing utilization and raising fares where competitively possible.

In the first quarter, WestJet increased fares “probably three times,” Durfy told analysts in a conference call Tuesday. However, he said the true impact of fare increases don’t really offset the rise in fuel costs, which is the issue.

The fuel strike will cost £50m a day

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Opposition leaders said ministers had been “caught napping” by the strike at the Grangemouth refinery in Scotland, adding that the dispute had serious national consequences.

The industry body warned that the closure of the BP Forties pipeline – which supplies one third of the UK’s oil and gas – would cost £50 million a day and urged ministers to stop the country being “held to ransom”.

The dispute is between workers and the plant’s owner, Ineos, over the decision to close a final salary pension scheme to new workers.

It appeared no closer to being resolved yesterday and the Unite union, which represents about 800 of the striking workers, said that while there are no firm plans, “there will be the possibility of further strikes”.

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

The Government owned National Oil Corporation of Kenya says it is to step up its expansion programme by acquiring more pump stations across the country.

Pump prices have been hovering around the Sh100 mark within Nairobi’s Central Business District since the beginning of last week.

The oil marketer, which also doubles up as marketing agent for exploration blocks, has already acquired 34 fuel stations up from six stations it owned two years ago. The stations are spread across the country.

Fuel costs force airlines to change strategy

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

AirTran Holdings Inc. boasts a 22 percent annual growth rate over the last five years and has nearly tripled its size from 2002.

So if AirTran says it’s time to slow down, things must be getting serious. And with a barrel of oil approaching $120, AirTran is saying it’s time to slow down.

“It is clear to us that our previous decisions to invest in growth and to invest in new airplanes has proven to be too aggressive for an oil environment that very few could have imagined just six months ago,” AirTran treasurer Arne Haak told investment analysts last week.
